Mormon intolerance towards gays

Those people that come to your door to tell you all about their god are generally either Jehovah's witnesses or Mormons. And, those mormons are always dressed in nice clothes (but not too nice) and very clean cut. Oh, they must be such nice people...until you learn about the bigotry that pervades this church. Until only a couple decades ago blacks were thought of as cursed and wicked. But, more recently, we have the efforts of the Mormon church to block equal rights for LGBT citizens of California.

While Proposition 8 still sits in the courts (why it's even there I can't fathom considering it should be a no-brainer to grant equal rights to gays citizens and all citizens really) we know how it got there. I recommend anyone interested to see story behind the scenes to pick up the documentary, 8 the Mormon Proposition. In it, you can learn about how the Mormon church and some of its members are so anti-gay that they took money from their own children's college funds in order to make sure that gays can't enjoy full citizenship status. It's truly insane - and that's not all of it.

Why don't they get rid of the pretext and formally join forces with Fred Phelps.

Our government is not supposed to be in the religion business. Our government is designed to be secular. That's one of the reasons why it works.

It seems to me that one should be taking one of two positions on this issue:

A) Marriage is, by it's nature, a religious rite, and it should only be performed by churches. The government has NO business conducting marriages, recognizing marriages, or offering ANY tax benefits, or other benefits, to people who are in marriages. Marriage is purely religious.

or,

B) The government DOES provide for and recognize secular marriage, and DOES offer it's citizens a number of benefits that go along with that marriage, and, therefore, ALL citizens must have equal access.

Since our government DOES recognize secular marriage, what is the justification for arbitrarily denying a part of the citizenry? A situation whereby some tax-paying citizens are allowed access to governmental benefits, while other tax-paying citizens are denied, is unsustainable.

It will end. Eventually.

Gay marriage is just a matter of time.

Religious bigotry is a powerful force, but so are the Constitution and American ideas of equal treatment under the law.

I trust that the American electorate will, eventually, see institutions such as the Mormon Church as the idiots that they are, and they will vote on the side of fairness under the law.

Civil marriage is simply another form of contract between people. Nothing more. As such, it should be open to all.

Any religious aspects that couples choose to attach to their marriage exist outside the institution's civil/legal framework, and should have no influence on the state's recognition or interpretation of it.

Yeah I'm a Mormon and all I have to say is wow you r all horribly wrong and u should probably get your fact straight before posting somthin like this because u might have a few people agree with u leave a comment or two but to everyone else u look like an idiot.

Yes? And what facts are those that I'm unaware of? The facts presented in the documentary that I linked to are pretty well known now. The Mormon church pumped millions of dollars into defeating marriage equality and equal rights for gays. They sent out letters that pressured people into sending the church more and more money to make sure teh gheys wouldn't get to marry each other. People took money from their kids' college funds in order to fund this bigotry.

What facts do I have wrong? What is it that makes me an idiot? Or is it simply that you don't like your bigotry put on full display?

wow you are an Idiot for real. You just believe any crap from a show? From the TV? Well in this case, we have peace all over the world and nobody surfers hungry as well.

Keep believing everything like that, without getting your facts straight.

How to get your facts straight? Go to the church and check it out at yourself, then you will be suprise how wrong you were.

But who am I, right? You are the smart one here just copying any link what shows a totally wrong reality about a really peaceful relegion.

But lets attack the peaceful relegion instead wondering, what is really wrong in the world.

And, yet, you choose to demonstrate none of those facts. This is typical of people who have knee jerk reactions to defend, but do not have the capacity to do so with facts. If you wish to contest the facts, you'll have to do more than simply yell that we've got it all wrong without presenting any contravening facts for your case.

The truth of the matter is that the Mormon church is so bigoted towards gays that they will do whatever they can (and have done) in order to discriminate against them. A simple google search is enough to dig up ample evidence of this.

I find it funny that you consider Mormons to be Jesus-followers when they do not even follow Him or His teachings as a whole. If you are going to attack any group for following Jesus it would not be Mormons. They follow the teachings of Joseph Smith as holy, in fact you will catch them more often with a Book of Mormon than the Bible. Get you historical facts right before you judge people-especially renowned figures such as Jesus Christ of Nazareth (I assume you mean Him, even though there were many men by that name during that time). Mormons consider Jesus to be a prophet, not the only Son of God as He himself proclaimed. They also believe in many things that Jesus neither practiced nor condoned. To blame Him for the actions of people who call themselves His followers is unjustified when those very people go against what He taught. Look to His actions for a reasonable dislike toward Him, not toward the actions of a people who do not even obey His commands. He was never rude or hateful to people. He put them in their place sometimes, but never out of spite or hate of that person. If you think Jesus Christ EVER condoned these kinds of hateful actions, you may want to read up on His life through trusted sources that historians site as historically accurate - not blogs or wiki.

"I find it funny that you consider Mormons to be Jesus-followers when they do not even follow Him or His teachings as a whole."

They seem to think they do, just as you do. The truth is that neither of you actually follows "Him or His teachings as a whole.

"If you are going to attack any group for following Jesus it would not be Mormons."

If you were paying attention, this post was about intolerance towards homosexuals.

"Get you historical facts right before you judge people-especially renowned figures such as Jesus Christ of Nazareth (I assume you mean Him, even though there were many men by that name during that time)."

Why don't you give us an example, and show us some of the facts, like contemporary mentions of this Jesus by the many historians living in the area where Jesus supposedly did all kinds of things that supposedly shook the world? Perhaps you can dig up some facts about the zombies that supposedly rose up right after Jesus supposedly died on the cross?

"Mormons consider Jesus to be a prophet, not the only Son of God as He himself proclaimed."

They consider themselves to be Xians, as did many of the warring factions of believers in the first and second centuries that believed in all kinds of things, like that Jesus was a separate god from the OT god and tricked the OT god into becoming less of an a-hole. That your ideas won out in a bloody conflict does not mean that they are the only ones.

"They also believe in many things that Jesus neither practiced nor condoned. "

Pot, I'm sure you should meet the kettle. For instance, you are probably not communist, but if you followed Jesus' supposed teachings, then you should be.

"To blame Him for the actions of people who call themselves His followers is unjustified when those very people go against what He taught."

Where did I do that? Did you even read the OP? But, nevertheless, what is taught in the Bible is intolerance towards gays.

"Look to His actions for a reasonable dislike toward Him, not toward the actions of a people who do not even obey His commands."

Look to some of my other posts where I point out the barbarities of the Bible.

"He was never rude or hateful to people."

Except when he attacked people with whips, wished hell upon his detractors, spat racist epithets at a woman seeking his help to heal her child, etc. And, that's only if we can believe the accounts given of him, which are most certainly fabrications.

"If you think Jesus Christ EVER condoned these kinds of hateful actions, you may want to read up on His life through trusted sources that historians site as historically accurate - not blogs or wiki."

Perhaps you should take your own advice (and perhaps you shouldn't make bad assumptions).

I'm sorry but Jesus did not teach gay marriage...you don't believe what happened in sodom and gomorrah right?? that's prove that God does not approves that type of marriage. Adma and Eve is another prove that only man and woman should procreate children.

Jesus doesn't seem to have any problem with homosexuals. Apparently, it's not that important to him. He DEFINITELY doesn't like divorce, however.

Do you support making divorce illegal?

Thus far, only men and women are even ABLE to "procreate" children.

What does that have to do with the legal right to marry? Are sterile couples denied a license? Are post-menopausal women refused the right to marry?

GCT said...

Actually, I quite agree with you that the Bible is anti-gay. It's a barbaric relic of an ancient time, and it's filled with hatred and intolerance. Moral people should discard it for the trash that it is.

Tigerboy said...

Absolutely. The Bible is quite dangerous. Forcing ancient understanding of morality into our modern pluralistic society is totally inappropriate.
